Sore Throat Tea with Honey and Ginger is a warming, soothing drink that will comfort your throat and still taste amazing with spicy ginger, sweet honey and a little lemon. This sore throat tea has got everything you need.
January is a month many feels under the weather. And whenever I feel a cold coming in, this is what I make. It’s easy enough to make even though all you want to do is lie in the bed and feel sorry for yourself.
What Can Help To Fight a Sore Throat?
- Ginger – ginger is both anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory. It also tastes amazing, so basically it’s magic in a root.
- Honey – honey can help fighting infections and relief pain. Honey also definitely helps to make anything taste better, and with the warm, earthy flavor, it fits perfectly in a sore throat tea.
- Lemon – lemon contains vitamin C and antioxidants. It also increases the saliva you produce which may help to keep your mucous membranes moist. Many strange words but it just means yay for lemon!
- Mint – mint can numb your throat with its cooling effect, so it will relieve some of the pain. It also has the highest antioxidant capacities of any food. Mint contains menthol, which is a natural aromatic decongestant that will help to break up phlegm and mucus (source).
Sore Throat Tea with Honey and Ginger
Okay, so looking at the list above, I clearly see that this sore throat tea actually is pretty good for you. It’s also important to fill up with plenty of fluids, so I think we are right on with this calming drink. I got the idea from my sister, who usually makes ginger tea when a sore throat is coming in.
And it doesn’t take much longer than boiling water, so there’s not many excuses not to make this. Begin with slicing up a few slices of ginger and add into a saucepan with 1-2 cups of water. At least 1 tbsp worth, but I usually end up with more like 3 tbsp. Add into the water. It doesn’t really matter how much you add in to the water, because we are going to take them out later. Give it a boil, and once it’s boiling, reduce heat to the lowest, add in the mint (if using) and just let it steep for 5 minutes. Strain, pour into a large cup and mix with honey and lemon juice, and enjoy.
If you don’t have mint (or lemon verbena!), don’t sweat it. I usually make this without, because my herb garden isn’t of much use during the winter months, when I normally would make this tea. So when I have mint, I add it in. It is a nice, cooling effect. And not to mention that mint tastes amazing. But other than that, this is still a delicious sore throat tea without the mint!
