Baked Grapefruit: 3 Healthy Recipes

Baked grapefruit brings out the sweetness of the grapefruit and adding spices such as honey, vanilla and cardamom or rosemary, honey and ginger really adds interest and comfort to this healthy fruit. This is such a healthy breakfast or snack!

Bake the bitter away

4 unbaked half grapefruits, two with rosemary, one with spice blends and one with a wet honey look

Grapefruit is a winter fruit, a more bitter citrus fruit than say the orange, but it's a refreshing mix up. Many don't like the bitterness of the grapefruit, and there in comes the baked grapefruit! Baking grapefruit really enhances the sweet, it gets juicier and sprinkling a little salt and a honey drizzle on top also helps. So if you don't like plain grapefruit - these recipes are definitely for you!

So I'm giving you three recipes today. I was planning on making just one, but then I ended up liking everyone I tried so much that I couldn't resist. Yes, I made 4 kinds (2 very similar) and I ended up eating everything for lunch the other day. Yeah, don't blame me, it's the life of food bloggers. We are also pro eaters.

Health Benefits of Grapefruit - the Superfruit

Here's a list of some of the benefits of grapefruit. I mean, doesn't this superfruit scream January more than anything!

  • Good for hydration
  • Low calorie food
  • Immune boosting with vitamin A and C
  • Improves cholesterol levels
  • Lowering triglycerides
  • Lowers blood pressure
  • Controls blood sugar
  • Speeds up wound healing

Now you really don't have any excuses not to make these baked grapefruit recipes. 🙂

Baked Grapefruit with Honey, Vanilla and Cardamom

This is a fantastic blend of flavors. It's warming, comforting and a little sweet. There really isn't much to call a recipe here, it's so easy. Slice the grapefruit in half, and if you want to sturdy the fruit you could slice the edge off a little so it's not so round anymore. Place them on a parchment lined baking sheet. Sprinkle cardamom on top, drizzle with honey and vanilla extract and then it's time for the oven to do it's business. Just pop it in a pre-heated oven of 400F (200C) and bake for around 17 minutes. Serve with yoghurt and granola if desired, for a healthy, nutritious and yummy breakfast.

Honey Ginger Rosemary Baked Grapefruit

I think this was my favorite (emphasis on think). I am a complete sucker for anything ginger and the delicious aroma of rosemary, but I try to understand that not everyone is like me. That is also why I provided you with all three recipes today, because some people don't like the strongness of ginger and the rosemary. This is news to me, how can anyone not like this pine like aromatic herb, right.

You may chop the ginger as finely as you like, or even grate it. Mine had a few small chunks. Cut the grapefruit in half and sturdy the ends by snipping off a small piece (optional tip). Place them on a parchment lined baking sheet. Sprinkle with fresh ginger, salt and drizzle with honey. Place a small piece of a fresh rosemary sprig (about the diameter of the grapefruit) on top of the grapefruit. You may want to add aluminum foil on top to prevent any burning, but I didn't feel that was necessary.

Pop it in a pre-heated oven of 400F (200C) and bake for around 17 minutes. Remove the roasted rosemary and serve with yoghurt and granola if desired, for a healthy, nutritious and yummy breakfast.

Baked Grapefruit with Warming Spices

And last but not least, the baked grapefruit with warming spices. This was the original idea I had. But then it got out of hand, as usual, and I tried several things. I wanted this one to be without extra sweetening because 1st - it's January and many try to avoid sugar, and 2nd I felt it didn't need it. But there's no problem in adding a drizzle of honey or maple syrup, I say go for it if you want to!

Slice the grapefruit in half, and if you want to sturdy the fruit you could slice the edge off a little so it's not so round anymore. Place them on a parchment lined baking sheet. Sprinkle the fresh and finely chopped ginger, cinnamon, nutmeg, cardamom and salt on top. Then place them in a pre-heated oven of 400F (200C) and bake for around 17 minutes. Serve with yoghurt and granola if desired, for a healthy, nutritious and yummy breakfast.

I am excited to try this. However, I notice a typo in your recipe. It says 400 C (200F), when it should be the other way around (it's correctly stated in the body of the post, but not in the recipe instructions themselves.)

I don't love grapefruit but I want to because of the beautiful color and the health benefits. I'm so excited to try this recipe and finally love grapefruit. I'm so glad you figured a way to cook the bitterness out of the grapefruit.
